Bees live in colonies along with the queen bee, the worker bee and the drones. The queen bee and the worker bee are both female while the drones are male. The drones only job is to mate with the queen whose only job is to reproduce. Worker bees clean the hive, and collect pollen and nectar to feed the colony. There are different types of bees such as bumblebees, honeybees, and carpenter bees.
Bumblebees live in large families. They are beneficial and yet harmful insects. They are beneficial because they pollinate crops and plants. They are harmful because they can sting more than once as their stingers don’t get caught in the skin when they fly away. Their stings are very painful too and can swell and irritate you for days after being stung. They can be found above ground around patio or deck areas, attics, roofs and also below ground as well.
Carpenter bees get their name from being able to drill through wood. They only dwell amongst themselves in the nests that they built. They cause damage to the wood where they build their nests and their nests can be very hard to reach.
Honeybee colonies can survive for many years eating honey and huddling together during winter months. You will find their nests in tree crevices, attics or chimneys. They have the ability to sting only once. Their stings can be extremely painful if the stingers are not removed immediately.
Wasp are diverse insects with different species. Wasp can be an array of colors from yellow to brown, metallic blue, and bright red. The bright colored ones are mostly the ones that sting; others don’t sting. Wasps are separated into two subgroups; social and solitary. Both subgroups are stingers and they can sting repeatedly. Despite being stingers, wasps are actually very beneficial to humans because they control other pest populations and protect crops.
Social wasps include yellow jackets and hornets. They start their colonies from scratch each spring by a queen who was fertilized the previous year. She builds a nest and lays more eggs and by winter, she dies, and the process starts all over again with a new queen. Social wasps use their stingers only when they feel threated.
Solitary wasp do not form colonies and yet they are the largest subgroups. You have cicada killers and the striking blue-and—orange tarantula hawks under this subgroup. Solitary wasps sting a lot especially because they use it to hunt. Many animals are afraid of solitary wasps because of their stinging abilities.
